I watched this film tonight. I was attracted to it because it had Ben Whishaw in it – he was absolutely brilliant. But I also found it interesting because it featured an interpreter in quite a prominent role.

OK; the way the interpreter fit into the plot was slightly cheesy, but she was engaged in quite a bit of cultural mediation, which was necessary for one of the central themes of the film: the elderly Chinese-Cambodian lady has not learned English or acculturated to the UK despite living there for 29 years, and that’s why her truly British son is feeling guilty for not living with her in her old age. The interpreter, who’s hired to establish communication between the son’s partner and the mother, is also thoroughly British and many of the funny moments in the film proved just how British she actually is…

Oh, and speaking of translation, I loved the scenes with Peter Bowles in it – the character he played was hilarious – albeit slightly incredible.
